2012 BMW 650i Coupe Gets a warm welcome to new technology

EXECUTIVE EDITOR BOB GRITZINGER: absolute beauty of the 2012 BMW 650i coupe is - rolling piece of automotive sculpture children. Proportion, line, position, altitude, low roof line, paint, everything about the car tells me that the designer and stylist won a lot of arguments when it comes to making plans for the series 6 -.

Not that the engineers do not get most of what they want - a long hood and low for a large powerplant, and attitudes, low width to deliver pitch perfect car handling and ride. This car is absolutely amazing from almost every angle - so much so that it takes a while to register that this is a great vehicle.

Settled in behind the wheel, and then supersize of coupe starts attacking you - the long hood, spacious cabin and adequate interior space (at least for the front seats). But once the car rolling and up to speed, especially when running in sport mode,

there is enough road feel and direct control to make the car feels much more nimble than its size might suggest. The car rips off line and have enough reserves to dial up instant acceleration, even at higher speeds.

It all happened in a calm and controlled interior, which intrudes a bit from the outside and intuitive comfort and support is top priority. I think the iDrive finally come into its own as a powerful controller of the base system, although it still makes some of the functionality is almost impossible to use while driving.

It's interesting car, encouraging.

ROAD TEST EDITOR JONATHAN WONG: I can not disagree with Bob in the appearance of a new 6-series coupe is the amazing part. Previous 6-series is more rounded and it still looks decent even today, but a new car, with lines more clearly, will age a little more gracefully, I think.

This is certainly a grand-touring cars. It was a big old car but the new car even greater, with the growth of the body 2.9 inches long and 2.95 inches longer wheelbase. The cabin is spacious with an attractive leather-wrapped dashboard and quality materials throughout. There is generous space for passengers front and back seat space serviced.

Then there is the personality of the car alive. Twin-turbocharged V8 is smooth and delivers power everywhere in the rev range, with peak torque available between 1750 rpm and 4500 rpm. However, a small knock against it is a tip on-throttle. The same thing with our long term BMW 750Li for here. There was a pause a bit after you hit the throttle before the engine responds and push you forward.

This machine is bolted to the eight-speed ZF automatic transmission with quick upshifts and downshifts star. Manual shift mode is also one of the best available at the box torque-converter automatic, with a good response and rev-matching on downshifts.

Being a BMW, 650i handles himself very well. Blow to the sport, plus a stiffer suspension with active roll stabilization and an optional 20-inch fat tire performance, and this big Bimmer is easy to sling around. It dives around the corner with a good grip, lots of peace and not feel like a 4200 pound vehicle. In a straight glide gracefully down the highway and can get you in trouble. If you do not pay attention, you will sail on the 80-plus mph without realizing it.

For just a tour of the city, cars slot into the comfort and 650i that softens and copes with holes and bumps with ease, even with low-profile tires. Function-wise, as I said, the rear seat can accommodate several people for a short ride, and also a decent-sized trunk.

This is a very good redo the 6-series BMW on the new. Now, let's get some seat time in the 560-hp M6.
