Team Chevy looks to win big in the Rolex 24 at Daytona

The 2012 Grand Am Rolex Sports Car Series opens with the 50th anniversary of the Rolex 24 at Daytona January 28-29. This 24-hour endurance race showcases some of the world’s best drivers. And, if the this race is any indicator, Team Chevy—just coming off of the First Manufacturer’s Championship in the GT Class—is positioned to bring home top honors in all classes. Chevrolet is represented by four teams running Corvette Prototypes in the DP Class and two teams running Camaro GT R’s in the GT class.

At the three-day “Roar Before the Rolex,” the new Chevrolet Corvette Prototypes posted the fastest speed during the three-day test. The No. 10 Sun Trust Racing Chevrolet Corvette posted the fastest speed of the test with driver Max Angelelli at 126.713 mph.

“You’ve got to understand that we were pushing the limit and, in the first session today, we did a qualifying run under the perfect conditions – low fuel, new tires, a good, clear lap, no mistakes,” Angelelli says. “It was the perfect lap. Obviously we’re happy, but not because of that lap. We’re happy because we did eight practices without a single issue. Our SunTrust Corvette ran really well the entire time.”

Chevy had a solid showing in all classes in the Roar Before the Rolex: Daytona Prototype (DP), Grand Touring (GT) and Grand Sport (GS). “So far, I’ve never had a January test as good as this one,” Angelelli says. “It’s been great, very successful. All we’re hoping for is another weekend like this one, and that will be the race weekend. The sad part is that this was just a test. There is a lot that will have to be achieved on race weekend, but I’m pretty confident.”

The Rolex 24 at Daytona airs on the Speed Channel at 2:30 pm EST on January 28.
