| Chevy preps for the upcoming 2012 IZOD IndyCar series and the Detroit Grand Prix |
Chevrolet recently announced our return to open-wheel racing by participating in the upcoming 2012 IZOD IndyCar series.
The rich history of Chevy in open-wheel racing is undeniable. We competed in Indy-style competitions as an engine manufacturer in 1986-1993 and 2002-2005 with V8 engines, leading to wins in 104 races, powering six champion drivers, and scoring seven Indianapolis 500 victories.
“Our vision is to design, build, and sell the world’s best vehicles – and racing is one of the best ways to showcase what we can do,” says Tom Stephens, GM Vice Chairman, Global Product Operations. “Re-entering IndyCar racing will help us take our advanced engine technology to the upper bounds of what’s possible.”
To prepare for our return, we’re rolling out some new high-powered technology for the Chevrolet IndyCar V6. Previously, Chevy collaborated with Ilmor Engineering to power the successful Chevy Indy V8.
We’re seeking to raise the bar once more with Illmor Engineering by testing a new direct-injected, twin-turbocharged V6 racing engine out on the racetracks to prepare for the 2012 competition.
This new breakthrough in technology will also be used to amp up other Chevy vehicles beyond the racing circuit.
“Turbo-charged, direct injection and the use of E85 are all the technologies that we’re using in the street to build cars that are fun to drive, high-performing yet fuel efficient and environmentally friendly,” says Mark Kent, director of GM Racing. “So it’s a great opportunity for us to take the learning at the racetrack and apply it to our street car.”
Beyond the 2012 IZOD IndyCar Series, Chevy will be sponsoring and racing in the Detroit Grand Prix returning to the Belle Isle Circuit next June.
