CHEVY UNVEILS TWO YOUTH-DESIGNED CONCEPT CARS AT THE 2012 NORTH AMERICAN INTERNATIONAL AUTO SHOW

With the arrival of the 2012 North American International Auto Show, we’ve decided to show off a new side to Chevy by unveiling unique concept vehicles that were developed almost exclusively by the minds and voices of Millennial youth.
“The Chevrolet Youth Concepts were born from two different visions of an ideal car. What we’re showing is just the beginning,” said John McFarland, Chevrolet Senior Manager, Global Youth Marketing Strategy. “Now we want to continue the discussions, listen to what people have to say, and return with something that represents a car for young people by young people, and that stirs their passion for our cars.”

By reaching out to the Millennial Generation, consisting of individuals who are already proving to radically move and shake the world, Chevy hopes to bring more new and exciting ideas into future vehicle designs.
“To capture the hearts of this segment, Chevy is getting back to the core of our brand: affordability, fun, optimism, and staying forward looking. But we aren’t doing it alone,” said McFarland. “We are harnessing the power of the voice of this group and co-creating the future.”
The Chevrolet concept vehicles are developed from market research and in-depth discussions with young consumers throughout the country and are then engineered by a team of young designers headed by Clay Dean, Executive Director of GM Advanced Global Design. The concept vehicles being unveiled at the North American International Auto Show include a rear-wheel-drive boxy coupe representing “functional muscle” and a front-wheel-drive sporty coupe described as “affordable exotic.”

In addition to these youth concept coupes, Chevy plans to debut the next incarnation of Sonic with the sleek new 2013 Sonic RS in the hopes of reaching out to young enthusiast drivers looking for both adventure and efficiency. The all-new Sonic RS has a 1.4L  4-cylinder turbocharged engine, unique 17” wheels and a unique spoiler among other features unique to the RS model. In addition to Sonic RS, Chevy will also be introducing the upcoming Spark mini car geared toward young urbanites looking to navigate the tight twists, turns, and parking of their urban jungles. The Sonic RS will begin to arrive at dealerships in Fall 2012 and the Spark will be available in Summer 2012.
We hope to push the Youth Concepts initiative to the next level by engaging young consumers through fun interactive events, social media, and face-to-face discussions. We have began this push towards Millennial consumers with initiatives such as Letsdothis.com. The site has been home to raising hype around Sonic with various stunts such as Rob Dyrdek kick-flipping a Sonic as well as the the launch of “The Game of Firsts, which dares consumers to pull their own simple gutsy maneuvers in everyday life. Such stunts include donating blood dressed in a vampire costume to going on a blind date literally blindfolded for the chance to be rewarded with a brand-new Sonic.
We hope to integrate the feedback from our youth-driven initiatives into a third concept vehicle that could be revealed later this year. The concept coupes along with Sonic RS and Spark will be revealed at the North American International Auto Show at Cobo Center in Detroit from January 9 – 22, 2012.
